March is almost upon us and at Pembroke Kilkenny hotel we can’t wait! March traditionally signals the beginning of our busy spring/summer season and it’s a great excuse to celebrate all things Irish.
We’re approaching two years since the pandemic began and, as a nation, we faced into multiple lockdowns and restrictions, so we think this is the perfect time to celebrate our freedom!
Kilkenny is the ultimate spot for a trip in March – there’s so much happening across two festivals on the same weekend! Book some central, great value accommodation in Pembroke Kilkenny hotel and we’ll make sure this is a St Patrick’s Day to remember for the right reasons.
1. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Festival in Kilkenny
After two long years of missing out, everyone’s favourite Irish holiday is back with a bang. Kilkenny has always been a great place to spend St Patrick’s weekend and even more so this year with an extra Bank Holiday on 18th March making it a four-day weekend. The county comes alive with ‘craic agus ceol’ with a variety of free events, workshops, performances and the star of the show, the St Patrick’s Day Parade which has been two years in the making.
Enjoy the vintage carousel and big wheel which will be present in the city from 15th March, experience, musical and street performances from international guests and an unforgettable parade on 17th March from early afternoon. That evening, enjoy a pub hop around the many bars and pubs in the city, and a fireworks display on 18th March.
There is a real buzz around the city over the St Patricks Festival with visitors from near and far soaking up the atmosphere. There are street food vendors on every corner, and of course the usual Kilkenny attractions and shops to explore over the busy weekend. Check out the full lineup for more details about the individual events.
2. Experience Kilkenny Tradfest
The St. Patrick’s Festival Kilkenny takes place alongside Kilkenny Tradfest, one of the biggest celebrations of Irish music in the country. The city has invited some of the country’s finest musical talent to perform in Kilkenny from main stages to corners of our favourite pubs. There is an extensive Irish music trail in the best pubs in the city giving you a huge number of free live music sessions. You’ll hear everything from trad to folk to sing-alongs on the medieval streets as locals and visitors nip in and out to hear great music.
There is a brand-new series of concerts this year in the beautiful Medieval Mile Museum amongst other venues, and you can buy tickets on their website. The line-up includes Paul Brady; The Kilfenora Ceili Band; Iarla Ó Lionáird & Steve Cooney; Máirtín O’Connor, Cathal Hayden & Séamie O’Dowd; Inni-K; Seo Linn; The Bonny Men; Kevin Burke & The Goodman Trio; Zoe Conway & John McIntyre; Pip & John Murphy; The Peter Browne Trio; Aoife Scott & Band; George Murphy & The Rising Sons and more!
