This year the “iPhone season” has finally arrived. Let’s start with iPhone 12, the smartphone that is probably the first object of desire when thinking of Apple smartphones. Let’s find out how much has changed in this new iPhone in 2020.
Packaging
The packaging of this iPhone 12 is the sparsest ever. Inside we find the USB-C / lightning cable and nothing else. No headphones and above all no wall power supply. Apple’s is an ecological choice, but considering that few (especially Apple users) have a USB-C power supply at home (ie with the port compatible with the supplied cable), there could at least be an “incentive” plan. to buy a discounted one separately. The 20W power supply is priced at $25.
Construction and Ergonomics
iPhone 12 charger port has been acclaimed for its design and for the return to the “origins” of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. The truth is that the shape with the “cut” edge allows the smartphone to contain the same components of the past, while reducing the thickness. We admit that the smartphone is slightly less comfortable in the hand than the rounded shapes, but we find that the design has gained: and not a little. It is once again a smartphone made of aluminum with a double glass protection: the front one has been reinforced against any falls with a ceramic crystal protection. Among the real strengths we include the weight, only 164 grams and the fact that the smartphone is still perfectly waterproof according to the IP68 standard.. Compared to the iPhone 11, it is also more compact.
Hardware
From the hardware point of view, the big difference lies in the new Apple 14 Bionic esa core processor , with Apple’s four-core graphics processor. If this iPhone therefore includes the latest technology from the company (with a SoC made at 5nm!) It is also true that right now it is very difficult to notice any advantages compared to the past. The smartphone is still fluid and snappy, just like iPhone 11 still is. The difference will probably be seen in the long run, with increasingly complex apps and more substantial updates. We then have 4 GB of RAM and 64, 128 or 256 GB of internal memory. Net of special cases, we do not recommend starting from the non-expandable 64 GB variant, which is few for many users. Always excellent connectivity: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC for Apple Pay, SIM + eSIM support and video output via the lightning connector. Among the (historical) absences: FM radio and 3.5 mm audio jack. Delighted once again with the presence of the Face ID , the best 3D unlock around. Someone was hoping for the return of Touch ID? We find it difficult and we honestly weren’t expecting it in this iPhone. And then there is the 5G Sub6, an innovation that makes a lot of talk about itself but which to date does not yet bring particular benefits. But at least you are ready for the future.
iPhone 12 has a dual camera system. The main one is a 12 megapixel ƒ / 1.6 optically stabilized and then we have a 12 megapixel ƒ / 2.4 wide angle. There have been some refinements in both hardware and software, but overall the results are similar to the excellent of the past, especially in good or very good light. Progress has undoubtedly been made in intermediate or low light images. Now the deep fusionit comes into action in every shot and this guarantees greater sharpness and detail to all our photos. Even in good light, however, the HDR in some cases seems to be a little more incisive. The night mode is now also available with portrait and wide-angle shots. iPhone 12 then continues where iPhone 11 left off, with minor refinements, where the great leap forward had already been made in the past.
And if there’s one area where iPhones have always done particularly well, it’s video. iPhone 12 is no exception and here too we have some steps forward compared to the past. Stabilization is always great and it is still possible to shoot videos in 4K at 60 fps . The only note is that it is not possible to switch between the two cameras while recording, but only before. Great detail and now also increased dynamic range thanks to the introduction of video recording in Dolby Vision. Movies made in this mode (which is activated automatically up to 4K at 30 fps) are truly exceptional. At the moment, however, it will be possible to fully and easily enjoy it only on other iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. To date, therefore, a crippled functionality, but that in the coming months we are sure we will see greater compatibility evolve on more and more devices.
The front camera is still a 12 megapixel ƒ / 2.2 , supported by the 3D sensors of the face unlock for a possible portrait mode. Not the best camera around, but it defends itself just fine.
Display
Where iPhone 12 makes the biggest leap over the previous generation is undoubtedly on the display which in 2019 was a bit the only real reason to think about buying a Pro variant rather . Here we have a 6.1-inch panel (ie same diagonal in a much more compact body) with OLED technology and a resolution of 1176×2532 pixels, what Apple calls “pompous” SuperRetina XDR. The screen supports HDR in Dolby Vision mode and true tone as always . The panel is still 60Hz, which is a shame considering we’ve already seen 120Hz on the iPad family. Excellent brightness (which however on the Pro version is even higher).

Software
This latest iPhone arrives on the market with iOS 14.1 pre-installed , which is the version of the software that consecrated the widgets and the app drawer. There isn’t much to say about iOS, like every year. Not because there is a lack of features or news, but because it is the usual comfortable and appreciable operating system that iPhone users are faced with every year. Among the news that we liked the most there are all the news related to privacy and let’s remember how iPhones are by far the most up-to-date smartphones in circulation. Not a small thing. Always excellent integration with MacOS, with iCloud and with all devices that support AirDrop . If we want to criticize him we would do it to Siri, which is still behind compared to other voice assistants.
Autonomy
The battery in this iPhone 12 is 2,815 mAh (although Apple never declares its capacity). It is about 10% smaller than that of the iPhone 11. There is no equal decrease in autonomy and roughly the autonomy has remained unchanged. Only an overly stressful day could drain your battery in a single day, but probably never enough to leave you on your toes. New for charging which is now fast up to 20W via cable . Then we have the new Magsafe magnetic charging systemat 15W: an ingenious method to guarantee certain compatibility with accessories and which offers other advantages such as the possibility of using the smartphone in your hand while it is charging and also that charging does not stop by mistake due to a misalignment of the smartphone. However, it also supports (at half the speed) the previous charging standard.
