NEET (UG) is a national-level pre-medical entrance exam for aspirants who wish to pursue UG (undergraduate) dental, AYUSH and medical courses. Female candidates who want to pursue nursing at AFMS institutes can also use this exam score. This exam is being conducted by an autonomous and premier test-conducting organisation of the Indian government called the NTA (National Testing Agency). It conducts international standard exams in an efficient and transparent manner. At present, it is the only medical entrance exam for admissions into various medical institutes across India. Furthermore, medical aspirants outside India should also write this test for such admissions. Let us discuss the registration process and other criteria required to write this entrance exam.

Every year, around 16 lakh students register for this exam. This year (2022) holds a record of 18.72 lakh registrations. Some important dates concerned with the upcoming NEET exam are provided below. These are the finalised dates as per the recent notifications.

How to Register?
First, visit the official NTA website and click on the application menu to proceed further. Fill in the personal details, after which candidates can generate their application number and password. Then, continue with the application process by filling in the other details and uploading the scanned documents. Finally, complete the process by paying the application fee. The documents required for application are:
- Recent postcard size photo
- Recent passport size photo
- Thumb impression
- Signature
- Valid ID proof
- Class 10 mark sheet
The registration process is considered successful only after the fee transaction. General candidates should pay INR 1,600; for General (EWS, OBC-NCL), it is INR 1,500, and for SC/ST/Third Gender/PwD it is INR 900. Candidates residing outside India should pay INR 8,500. Do take a printout of the confirmation page for future reference.
Syllabus and Exam Pattern
The exam comprises 200 multiple choice questions from the following subjects – zoology, botany, physics and chemistry. Aspirants have to attend these 200 MCQs in 200 minutes (2 pm to 5.20 pm). The NEET 2022 date of examination has been finalised as 17 July. Any candidate who has taken biology, physics and chemistry as major subjects in the Class 12 exam or equivalent exam can attend this entrance test.
Each subject has two sections, with one section having compulsory questions and the other section having a choice. Thus, out of 200 MCQs, 180 have to be attempted for 720 marks (each MCQ carries 4 marks). Also, there is a negative marking of -1 for every incorrect attempt.
Preparation tips
Every year, the applicants’ number increases, and so does the competition. Thus, follow these tips to crack the exam on the first attempt:
- Analyse the syllabus and curate a realistic study planner. The planner must cover all the subjects with equal importance.
- First, familiarise the NCERT concepts and then move on to high-standard study materials. Create short notes that help with student’s daily as well as last-minute revisions.
- Go through previous years’ question papers and attend online mock tests to gain practice.
- Do not forget to take care of diet, health and sleep. Maintaining a positive attitude and a healthy body is vital to crack any competitive exam.
